Chapter 27

After Edith finished her work report, outside the window, the evening was settling into a soft, dim glow

She stretched her body and said, Alright, kiddos, let’s

Mommy, you’ve worked hard!Jeanne came over and massaged Edith’s shoulders thoughtfully

Edith’s face was then covered in cookie crumbs from Jeanne’s affectionate nuzzle

She thought amusingly, Goodness, the desk is littered with empty snack packets, and she hasn’t left a single piece.’

Edith playfully teased, Why didn’t you share some snacks with me, hmm? Look at your little belly. It’s already sticking out.”

She then attempted to poke Jeanne’s belly, but Jeanne swiftly dodged and hid behind Ruben

Blushing slightly, Jeanne murmured with a slight smile, Ruben had eaten some too.” Although Ruben had hardly eaten any, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he just nodded in agreement

He pondered, Can’t help it, she’s my sister, I have to spoil her a bit.‘

Edith laughed helplessly. Hey, don’t make Ruben take the blame.”

Since returning to the country, Ruben was still not very talkative, but his facial expressions had become more varied, which had been a sign of improvement

At least he was starting to care about his family’s emotions

Edith locked her office door and took them home with one hand holding Ruben and the other holding Jeanne

Then, she saw a slender figure in a light pink outfit standing at the villa’s entrance

As Edith got closer, she recognized it was Danika

What is she doing here?Edith wondered

Ms. Jones! I have made some cupcakes and bagels. I heard Jeanne likes them.”

Having finally seen them return, Danika brightened up a bit and smiled as she handed over a small basket

Thank you.” Seeing Danika had no intention of leaving, Edith reluctantly invited her inside

Please, make yourself at home. It’s a bit messy here. I hope you don’t mind the clutter.”

Edith quickly tidied up the toys scattered on the carpet by her two children

Ruben, clutching his backpack, silently went to his room. Meanwhile, Jeanne stood in the middle of the room, glanced around, and decided to follow Ruben’s lead, retreating to her room as well

She thought, This lady seems gentle, but her daughter is not friendly at all! Better to keep

Chapter 27 distance!‘

Danika looked around the living room, twirling her hair, and casually remarked, It looks so cozy here. I wanted to go for this style too, but Joyce’s dad didn’t like it.”

Edith’s brows twitched slightly

She thought sarcastically, She waited at the door all this while just to say this?‘

Unable to figure out Danika’s intention, Edith replied nonchalantly, A friend helped me choose the house. I didn’t really ask for details.”

As they sat and talked, their conversation was tepid and somewhat uneasy. It was filled with an unspoken, indescribable awkwardness

Unaware of the underlying tension, Danika continued to smile, and her dimples added to her gentle appearance

Actually, I came today to tell you Joyce is transferring schools. I had hoped she could spend more time with your kids, but Joyce’s dad found an international bilingual kindergarten which he thought was more suitable for her.”

Danika sipped her water, her slender fingers delicately tracing the contours of the cup. There was a hint of sadness in her eyes as if she was genuinely upset about the matter

That’s good,Edith said, not out of formality, but sincerely

She mused, If Joyce transfers schools, then I won’t have to interact with Gideon outside of work

Both of them then fell silent again

Realizing Edith was not keen on socializing, Danika tactfully stood up and said, You’re picking up Mr. Myers from the hospital tomorrow, so I won’t keep you from resting

I really envy you two. Even though you’re not married, you both seem closer than me and Giddy. He’s even still busy with work now.”

Hearing this, Edith’s brow twitched even more violently

She thought in shock, She doesn’t know Gideon is hospitalized. And the most awkward part is that I’m picking him up tomorrow. What kind of bizarre threeperson relationship is this?‘

Feeling oddly like she had been caught in an affair, Edith grew increasingly uneasy

She coughed lightly. We’re just good friends. Ms. Hayes, you should rest early, too.”

After seeing Danika off, Edith leaned against the door, feeling mentally exhausted

What on earth is Gideon up to?! Constantly ordering me around instead of his crush. Could he be hiding his hospitalization from Danika to avoid worrying her?”

Edith muttered to herself, feeling this possibility was quite likely

She then made a face, feeling an inexplicable pang of jealousy

Edith mused sarcastically, Gideon never cared about my feelings before. The status of a crush is indeed extraordinary

Edith shook her head, quickly dismissing these inappropriate thoughts, and went to her room to wash up

Chapter 27

As she lay on the bed after washing up, the thought of facing Gideon’s inscrutable face the next day made her uncomfortable

Edith’s mind was in turmoil, and she didn’t even realize when she fell asleep

She still woke up with dark circles under her eyes

Looking at herself in the mirror, Edith thought, If this keeps up, I’m going to wear myself

out much sooner.‘

Fortunately, Bonnie was free today and could help take Ruben and Jeanne to kindergarten

Edith then hurriedly left the house with her bag

With less than 30 minutes to eight o’clock, she needed to get to the hospital quickly

Edith felt she couldn’t be late since she had promised to pick Gideon up

discharge procedures, and Gideon was ready to leave.

She arrived at the hospital just in time to find that Ray had

already Gideon’s

Edith, visibly annoyed, said, Mr. Peterson, such a grand exit for a simple discharge with so many people to pick you up.”

She thought angrily, ‘A task one person could easily handle, yet he had to call me!‘

Having changed out of his hospital gown, Gideon was sitting on the bed reading

morning newspaper

Without even looking up, he replied, Ray has something else to do. Who else will drive me home if he leaves?”

Ray, the person in question, had no clue about the something else” he supposedly had to do but caught the hint in Gideon’s words that he should leave the room and stop being a third wheel

He mused, Now I understand the saying about being useful only when needed. Use and discard. That’s something my toughhearted boss would do!’

After Gideon put down the newspaper and saw Ray still lingering at the door, Gideon frowned slightly

He then shot Ray a nonchalant glance.

I’ll be off then! The rest is up to you, Ms. Jones!” Ray quickly handed Edith the medication and hurried out

Holding the bag, Edith didn’t even bother to check its contents

Let’s go, don’t keep me from my other tasks.”

Come here and help me,Gideon demanded, looking at her as if it were the most natural thing

Edith gritted her teeth in frustration

She refused to yield to such pressure. Your stomach condition is healed, and you’re not disabled. Can’t you even walk? I didn’t expect you to become so frail after all these years, Mr.

Disabled? Can’t walk? Gideon repeated in his mind

Chapter 27

Gideon’s attention was only fixated on those few words, and his expression instantly grew grimmer

He thought angrily, No wonder Edith is so impatient. She’s probably thinking about picking up Shane later!‘

Gideon’s jaw tensed, outlining his stern features. His voice carried an indescribable emotion as he asked, Edith, do you really have to talk to me like this?

Reflecting on their past, he thought, Edith wasn’t like this five years ago. She was the one who left, betraying our marriage. Now, what gives her the right to speak so harshly?‘

Seeing Gideon displaying such a rare expression, Edith found herself momentarily at a loss. Her defiance then faded, and her confrontational tone softened involuntarily as she muttered, I’ve always been like this. You just never knew.”

‘After all, from us being married to separated, Gideon had never really tried to understand meEdith mused

Edith helped him up and hurriedly walked toward the exit

She pondered, There’s an error in yesterday’s report data. I need to rush to the lab to correct it. Every minute wasted here affects my work progress

With that, the two left the hospital, each lost in their own thoughts
