She lowered her gaze. The thought of Aubree in the hospital sent a sharp pain through her chest. It felt as though her muscles were being ground to dust, and thousands of needles pierced her body.
Taking a deep breath, Brielle looked at him calmly. “Let’s go. Back home.”
Max remained motionless, as he often did, standing in the quietest spot where the fewest people gathered, indifferently watching a world that seemed unrelated to him. He stood tall and elegant, his dark pupils reflecting Brielle’s silhouette for a few seconds before he slowly approached her.
They got into the car with Patrick at the wheel. They had barely driven a hundred meters when Brielle spotted Sydney on the phone.
Relief washed over Sydney’s face as she recounted a fabricated story to her family, a smug smile playing on her lips. “Yeah, he ran off with some girl. I don’t know what happened. No need to make a scene at their place. I’m fine. I’ll adjust and get back to work. Mom, don’t worry. I’ve saved enough money to start my own little shop. And I’ve got a new guy who’s really into me. As for Adrian, that loser, I’ll forget him soon enough.”
Brielle’s car passed Sydney, who was absorbed in her tale and didn’t notice.
Brielle watched silently through the side mirror as Adrian stood behind Sydney with a stone in hand and threw it hard at her. Sydney fell, and Adrian, still unsatisfied, choked her.
“Bitch!”
The fury of a normally gentle person was lethal.
The scene continued to play out in the rearview mirror, but Brielle’s eyes remained calm. No pity rose within her for these people. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
She turned away, noticed Max watching her, and smiled. It was a clean, bright smile, her eyes reflecting light. But Max knew it wasn’t external light but the fire burning within Brielle. He couldn’t help but want to reach for her hand. If she desired, he would level any obstacle for her. But the Brielle of now would surely reject him. Aubree’s ordeal had awakened the deepest, wildest part of her. She wanted vengeance and to drag Tessa through the mud.
As badly as Aubree had fallen, Brielle would make the other suffer tenfold. Even if Michael stood in her way now, she wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger.
Max understood even more clearly that if he dared to intervene, Brielle would cast him aside as if he were trash. Human instinct is a curious thing, inexplicably sensing the minutiae.
Like a dormant volcano with cracks already forming, slowly spreading, and widening bit by bit, the fire in her eyes was raging, waiting for her to extinguish it herself.
A sudden pain gripped Max’s heart as if he were being choked. Of course, he had always hoped for Brielle’s growth and knew that Beaconsfield couldn’t contain her, but he never wished for

Brielle’s life was filled with solitary years, so Aubree’s friendship was paramount. It was 50 important that Brielle would risk her own destruction.
They were back at Premier Palace, and Brielle hadn’t said a word to him. Max felt his importance waning, a realization that pained him. He coughed softly, his complexion turning pale, but Brielle didn’t look back. Instead, she took a serious call, giving instructions.
Max felt his body growing colder. His lips were pressed tight as he watched Brielle ascend the stairs, enter the master bedroom, and close the door.
Patrick stood behind him, unsure. “Sir, what should we do?”
Ms. Brielle seemed angry with everyone, hell–bent on doing something.” Should we stop her or support her?”
Max settled on a nearby sofa, blinking away the stinging in his eyes. He hadn’t slept all night and had been in meetings all morning. Now his eyes were unbearably sore. His clothes were thin, and he truly felt cold, his body burning with fever.
“Sir, you look unwell. Should we call a doctor?”
“No need,” Max replied curtly, his brow furrowed. “Don’t stop her.”
Patrick nodded, pausing to think, “So we don’t stop Ms. Brielle no matter what? Right now, she seems to despise Ms. Tessa.”
Max closed his eyes. He had already contacted the hospital and was aware of what Aubree had suffered. Brielle’s anger was imaginable. Anyone who blocked her path would become her adversary.
