Chapter 97
Perhaps Naomi was truly dog–tired or that she always came to her senses slowly, not to mention the fact that her slow reaction was exacerbated by her exhaustion. She stood still, dazed for a good few
seconds.
Scott got in the car and closed the door.
As he started the engine, the headlights shone on Naomi’s eyes. She had to block the lights with her hands and squint her eyes.
He drove off, looking at her trying to block the lights from her eyes. He then turned the steering wheel.
As the car passed her by, the lights were no longer on Naomi’s face. She watched as Scott drove off into the night.
She narrowed her eyes, still feeling a little dazed.
Was Scott talking about the recent event? That must have been what he meant. Otherwise, what else would she contact him for?
She had no other reasons for it.
Naomi yawned and headed upstairs, terribly exhausted. She was fighting to stay awake.
In the rearview mirror, Scott looked at Naomi standing under the moonlight, looking at him calmly.
It was as if she was a wife sending off her husband and waiting for him to return.
He looked ahead and pressed on the gas pedal. The car engine roared and sped off into the night.
At that moment, his gaze gradually darkened as well.
Naomi returned home, washed up, and got into bed. She fell asleep soon after.
Not long after she slept, her phone vibrated. It was a message.
Naomi did not hear her phone vibrate. Perhaps she did, but she was too tired to do anything.
As most of the lights in the neighborhood were out, Charles‘ was the rare one whose lights were still on, having just finished work.
He should have been tired…but he was not. He was looking at the text message he had just sent.
He sent Naomi a message, even though he knew that she might have been asleep already. He had to make sure of something, or he would not be able to sleep for the entire night.
He was even more worried after he sent the text.
The image of her leaving with the other man that night was imprinted on his memory. This was the

first time he felt threatened, not to mention helpless.
He panicked. He was afraid.

Three years was a long time. It was extremely difficult for him to enter her life, get rid of that man in her heart, and replace him.
He was not cowering in fear, but this was the first time that he realized how cruel time was.
The
past three years had definitely left a dent in her heart. It was not something he could replace, even if he wanted to.
He thought that he did not care about her past; all that mattered was that he could get close to her.
However, it was at times like this that he realized he could not ignore it at all.
Seeing them standing together, feelings and thoughts he never experienced before grew in his heart. He wanted that man to have never existed in her life. He wanted her to not get in touch with him ever since they got divorced. He hoped that they would live parallel lives.
Most importantly, he wished that she was looking at him, and not the other man. That he would be in the rest of her life, not the other man.
Charles was stunned by his own thoughts. This was the first time that he realized he could get jealous. Everyone has a darker side to them, after all.
As time ticked by, Charles looked at his phone. It remained silent. There was no response at all.
He gradually smiled.
‘Charles Ward, who knew there would come a day when you would be afraid?‘
