Gideon’s eyes flickered with a fit of uncontrollable anger as he questioned, “Did you teach her to do that?”
“I…” Danika hesitated to speak, knowing that anything she said now would be futile.
She forced Joyce to apologize to Edith and her family.
“I’m sorry. I failed to discipline Joyce. From now on, I will bear all the expenses for Jeanne, and I promise such incidents won’t happen again.”
Danika’s eyes turned red, and she felt rather uncasy.
She had never expected such an accident to happen, especially when Gideon came over to visit her and Joyce.
Edith, sensing Jeanne’s body temperature rising, didn’t want to entangle further and hurriedly carry her away.
What happened had already happened, and compensation was of no use to her.
Jeanne occasionally coughed, expressing her discomfort. “Mom, I feel horrible…”
Edith soothed her hoarsely. “It’s okay, sweetheart. You’ll feel better soon. I will take your to the hospital.”
She couldn’t drive while carrying Jeanne, so she had to walk to the roadside to hail a cab.
However, very few taxis would linger around the villa area. Edith waited for a few minutes, yet none arrived.
Edith was about to call Bonnie to ask her to come when a Rolls–Royce with a familiar license plate stopped in front of them.
Without guessing, she knew it was Gideon.
The car door opened.
Gideon said, “Get in. I’ll take you to the hospital.”
“No need.” Edith, indifferent, just wanted to keep some distance from Gideon and his family.
Gideon spoke again. “Do you plan to wait by the roadside until dawn? Jeanne needs treatment as soon as possible.”

Edith had no choice but to compromise.
Jeanne indeed needed to go to the hospital immediately.
So, reluctantly, she got into the car with Jeanne.
During the drive, there was no communication, and the atmosphere remained tense.
Upon reaching the hospital, Jeanne was rushed to the emergency room, and nobody else was allowed to accompany her.
Edith noticed that Ruben, standing in the corner, was also trembling. She hugged him and reassured him softly, “Don’t worry, Jeanne will be fine.”
The doctor came out after a short while.
Jeanne’s fever was a result of catching a cold combined with excessive fright. Resting for a few days would suffice.
Edith finally relaxed after hearing the doctor’s explanation.
“Thank goodness. Jeanne is fine, she thought.
The doctor recommended Jeanne stay in the hospital for observation for a night.
Edith settled the two children before pulling Gideon out of the ward.
The corridor was quiet and deserted, requiring them to speak in hushed tones.
Edith said, “Go back.”
“I’ll accompany you.” Gideon refused to leave.
Edith, exhausted, couldn’t muster the energy to deal with him and weakly said, “I don’t want to see you. Go back.”
She knew this incident wasn’t Gideon’s fault, but she couldn’t help but vent her anger on him.
The best way to control her emotions was to avoid him.
Gideon remained silent for a long time.
He suddenly felt that Edith was drifting farther away from him.
Edith thought of something else and added, “I won’t blame anyone for this matter. There’s no need to reprimand Ms. Hayes when you go back. I know taking care of Joyce is quite challenging for her. As the kid’s father, it’s more important for you to reflect on
it.”

Gideon didn’t respond to her words. He just said, “I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow. If there are any issues with Jeanne, inform me promptly.”
Having said that, he left the hospital.
Sitting in his car, Gideon didn’t immediately start the engine.
Images of Jeanne calling him “Daddy” kept replaying in his mind.
“Daddy, why don’t you want us?

Gideon pressed the spot between his brows where a faint ache lingered.
Suddenly, Gideon remembered that Jeanne had been mumbling something about her camera when he carried her.
So, he drove back to the poolside.
At this hour, all the lights around had been turned off, so Gideon had to use the flashlight on his phone to search for the camera.
Gideon walked around the pool but couldn’t find it, so he went underwater and felt along the bottom of the pool..
After a while, he finally found something.
Gideon’s expression relaxed as he retrieved a soaked camera from the water.
Climbing out of the pool, a cold breeze enveloped him, and he instinctively sneezed.
Carrying the soaked camera, Gideon went home.
Without even taking a shower, he changed out of his damp clothes and started. tinkering with the camera.
Gideon dismantled the camera, placing all the components neatly on the table.
He absentmindedly relaxed his knuckles. It had been a while since he had dealt with these objects, and the disassembly process was slower than before.
Gideon busied himself at the desk throughout the night.

Gideon casually took a couple of shots. Fortunately, the image quality was unaffected.
He browsed through the photo album, and the pictures Jeanne had taken the previous night were still there.
Gideon stared at Ruben’s face for a long time, feeling that it looked somewhat familiar, but he couldn’t recall where he had seen it before.
Now that the camera had been fixed, his mission was accomplished.
Gideon got up to wash up, sneezing a few times, feeling dizzy as he walked.
Although Edith said he didn’t need to pick them up, he insisted on going to the hospital.
Jeanne had just woken up and was cooperating with the nurse to measure her temperature when Edith went to handle the discharge procedures.
Gideon pushed the door open, and Ruben showed a guarded expression..
Gideon raised an eyebrow at him. “Why do you show this expression every time you see me?”
Ruben reacted as if there were some irreconcilable hatred between them.
He pressed his lips, not saying a word, and continued to stare at Gideon.
Gideon couldn’t help but squat down, leveled his eyes with Ruben, and asked, “Why are. you silent again?”
Ruben snorted, turned around, and sat back by his sister’s bedside.
He didn’t want to talk to Gideon.
The nurse finished measuring the temperature, put the medicine on the table, and left.
Gideon handed the flowers to Jeanne, standing by the bed. “The flower shop said most kids prefer this bouquet.”
He then handed over a bouquet of sunflowers.
Jeanne did like it a lot and thanked him. “Thank you, Gideon.”
She smelled the flowers, already thinking about where to place them for the best effect.

Seeing her complexion better than last night, Gideon asked, “Are you feeling better?”
“Much better!”
Jeanne thanked him again. “Thank you for saving me yesterday, Gideon.”
Gideon chuckled, finding her amusing.
She expressed her gratitude twice in a row without mentioning the grievances from last night.
“I thought you would be angry with me,” Gideon said.
Jeanne felt a little embarrassed. “Yesterday, I was just throwing a tantrum. It was Joyce who pushed me, so I shouldn’t be mad at you. I should thank you because you saved my life.”
Although she was a bit angry, she wouldn’t blame Gideon.
After all, Gideon was Joyce’s dad, but Jeanne knew how to distinguish right from wrong and wouldn’t vent her bad mood on others.

The incident with the camera being damaged in the water had saddened her more than falling into the pool did.
Edith had promised to buy her a new one, yet it didn’t improve her mood.
After all, a new camera couldn’t replace the lost photos.
