“What’s got you calling me out of the blue?” Enoch’s voice was light, tinged with amusement. Amidst the background noise, Brian could make out the dulcet laughter of women. He figured Enoch was likely in the
middle of some exclusive gathering.
“Bro, I’ve got an urgent matter that needs your attention. Can you spare a moment?” Brian asked, his voice
carrying a rare urgency.
Enoch, the reputed top dog at the precinct and Brian’s cousin, was a man whose shoulders bore the weight of greater responsibilities than their cousin, Remington. Despite his frequent presence in Streamville, family reunions were a rarity.
The phrase “urgent matter” was not one Enoch was accustomed to hearing from Brian. Even if he had been swamped, he wouldn’t have been able to turn a deaf ear.
After a moment of consideration, Enoch excused himself from the clutches of his company and stepped onto the balcony for privacy. “What’s going on?” he asked, his tone now serious.
Outside, Natalie watched as two more cars pulled up.
Men in black trench coats, broad–shouldered and robust, stepped out. A few patrolling officers approached them with respect, greeting, “Boss!”
She felt she recognized one of them.
Before she could place the man, Enoch’s sharp instincts kicked in, and he looked up to catch Natalie’s gaze from the window above.
Recognizing her as Brian’s cousin, memories clicked into place. Brian’s grandfather, Herbert, had fathered two daughters. Enoch was the only son of his elder daughter. And Brian was the son of the other daughter. This made Brian the younger of the two.
After locking eyes for a few seconds, Enoch realized the extent of Brian’s predicament.
True to his word, Enoch was there to offer his help. There was no question of backing out now.
When Natalie descended, the doctor that had accompanied Enoch took one look at her neck and declared, “This could be classified as a first–degree burn. The skin’s red, swollen, itchy, and painful.”

Natalie, on her part, felt rather embarrassed. It was barely a scratch, and they were classifying it as a fest degree burn
Does it hurt? Enoch asked, his gaze softening as he turned to Natalie.
“Nah, just a tiny bit of a sting” she replied, shaking her head.
The officer, poised to take her statement, hesitated, unsure whether to document the injury as a first–degree burn.
“Are you dear?” Enoch furrowed his brow slightly.
The officer quickly emphasized the first–degree burn in the report.
“Have we copied the hotel surveillance footage?” Enoch inquired of his subordinate.
*All witness statements have been collected, and the footage has been copied,” the subordinate replied with a series of nods.
“That’s good,” Enoch said, standing up. “You should go up and rest. Brian will handle the rest.”
“What about Gracia…” Natalie started, confusion painting her features.
